Lady's Bridge Brewery

The Lady's Bridge Brewery was founded in 1791 by Edward Nanson and traded as Nanson & Co. 'ale, porter, bitter beer brewers & maltsters'.
The business was sold to W.H.Birks & Co. in 1858.
Duncan Gilmour & Co. Ltd was registered in 1891 and did not actually produce alcoholic beers, rather it was a hop bitter brewer, located at Furnival Gate.
When Gilmour's purchased the Lady's Bridge Brewery from W.H.Birks & Co., in 1900, it owned 21 properties including pubs, hotels, and off-licences.

Duncan Gilmour & Co. Ltd Expands

Between 1901 and 1906, the firm acquired a further 7 properties belonging to Whitmarsh, Watson & Co. Ltd of Sheffield.
In 1906 Gilmour's took over the business and two breweries of the above Company.
Between 1900 and 1915 Gilmour's also had interests in the City of Liverpool, and its ownership of the Windsor Brewery led to the adoption of the brand name 'Gilmour's Windsor Ales' which it continued to use until the Company closed.
During the 1910s the firm registered many of it brewery labels.
The Company continued to expand both through the purchase of over 35 public houses and off-licencess, and the acquisition of the Norfolk Brewery and public houses of William Greaves & Co. Ltd, in 1920.
Gilmour's estate totalled over 150 properties in 1920.

Joshua Tetley & Son Ltd Takeover

By the 1950s Duncan Gilmour & Co. Ltd had amassed over 300 public houses, and the Company was ripe for a takeover. This duly happened in 1954 when Joshua Tetley & Son Ltd, based in Leeds, purchased Gilmour's brewery and 342 properties.
Brewing ceased at the Lady's Bridge Brewery in 1959, however the business was not wound up until 1964.
The brewery was replaced by the Sheffield Magistrate's Court.
