Origins of the Midland Brewery
The Brewery was built on Northgate in New Basford near Nottingham in 1870 by Abraham Poynton & Co.
A.Poynton & Co. was an ale, porter and bitter brewer. Poynton traded on his own until 1880.
In 1881 the firm was trading as the Midland Brewery Company.
Between 1885 and 1887 Benjamin Robinson, who also was a publican at the Barleycorn Inn, ran the Midland Brewery.
Madden & Dell became the new owners of the brewery in 1888. The firm changed the name to the Red Lion Brewery, and this was the firm's trade mark throughout its trading history.
Madden & Dell brewed in New Basford until 1887 when the Company was purchased by Lawrence Levy & Co. which traded until 1890.
Between 1894 and 1899 the premises were unoccupied.
Hiram R.Fletcher bought the brewery but in 1902 bankruptcy forced him to sell the business.
Thomas Losco Bradley, who had brewed at the Barleycorn public house on Raleigh Street since 1895, purchased the Midland Brewery in 1904.
Bradley's Brilliant Ales
Bradley's built a reputation for the quality of its beers and in 1905 it won a brewing award, which was repeated in 1928 when its Mild Ale won first prize at the Brewers Exhibition in London.
As a result of the Brewers Exhibition win the Company began advertising its products as 'Bradley's Brilliant Ales'.
The business was registered in 1928 as Thomas Losco Bradley Ltd.
During the 1930s, profits doubled and the brewery flourished, supplying its ales to over 40 tied houses.
In addition to its draught ales, Bradley's also produced a range of bottled beers, which were bottled by Hart & Co. in Nottingham.
During the 1950s, many small brewers were taken over by larger concerns, and Bradleys was no exception.
The Midland Brewery, with its tied estate, was acquired by James Shipstone & Sons Ltd in 1954.
The brewery buildings were demolished and the area was redeveloped for housing in 1964.
