The West Bergholt Brewery - Thomas Daniell Senior
The first firm was founded by Thomas Daniell Senior at West Bergholt, near Colchester, in 1815.
Thomas purchased the freehold land including the West Bergholt Brewery in 1840.
The business traded as Thomas Daniell & Sons when one of his sons joined him in 1872.
The Castle Brewery in Colchester - Thomas Daniell Junior
A second firm was founded by Thomas Daniell's son, Thomas Daniell Junior, in Colchester in 1866. The Castle Brewery was built in 1876.
Until 1880 the trading name was Daniell Brothers & Crookes, but by 1887 the business traded as Daniell Brothers & Co.
The East Donyland Brewery - Shepherd Thomas Daniell & Co.
The East Donyland Brewery was founded as a maltings business in 1808.
The business was based on the High Street in Rowhedge, near Colchester.
By 1874 it was operating as a brewery, and was run by another of Thomas Senior's sons, Shepherd Thomas Daniell. The brewery produced ales, stout and porter, on draught and in bottles.
Due to failing health, Shepherd passed the running of the Donyland Brewery on to his son, Robert Daniell, in 1884. Shepherd died in 1889.
The firm traded as S..T.Daniell & Co.
West Bergholt Brewery and the Castle Brewery Merger
In 1887, Daniell & Sons West Bergholt Brewery merged with Thomas Daniell Junior's Castle Brewery. The new Company traded as Daniell & Sons' Breweries Ltd, as evidenced by a debenture certificate issued in 1890.
The Castle Brewery was closed in 1892, when brewing was transferred to West Bergholt.
The Colchester site was used as the Company's registered offices and Director's boardroom.
The brewery premises are still intact.
Daniell & Sons' Breweries Ltd Acquires the East Donyland Brewery
Daniell & Sons' Breweries Ltd acquired the East Donyland Brewery of S.T.Daniell & Co., with 27 public houses, in 1897.
In 1900 the Donyland Brewery plant and equipment was sold, and by 1902, the premises had reverted back to opearting as a maltings business.
The premises were demolished in 1937 and the site is now a garage and residential area.
Truman, Hanbury, Buxton & Co. Ltd
By the early 1930s, Daniell & Sons' Breweries Ltd employed about 100 individuals and was making modest profits.
The West Bergholt Brewery, with 150 public houses, was acquired by Truman, Hanbury, Buxton & Co. Ltd in 1958, and the brewing operations were moved to London.
Brewing ceased in 1959, and the site was used by Truman's as its maltings, bottling and distribution depot.
When Truman's closed in 1988 the buildings were demolished a year later, and the West Bergholt Brewery was converted into residential use.
The manufacturer's mark states - 8 MB. Made in England.
