Foundation of the Brewery
The business was founded on Hamilton Street in Birkenhead in the 1830s.
The firm's offices in Birkenhead were situated in Market Square South, now Market Square.
The firm traded as Gatehouse and Yates from 1877 to 1887 when it merged with the Castle Brewery on Fairfield Street in Ardwick near Manchester.
Yates Castle Brewery Ltd
It was registered in 1887 as William Yates & Co. Ltd and was re-registered as Yates Castle Brewery Ltd in 1896 with 196 public houses.
Brewing continued in Birkenhead until 1934 when all production was transferred to the Castle Brewery in Ardwick.

The Castle Brewery was acquired by John Smith's Tadcaster Brewery Co. Ltd in 1961.
Brewing ceased in 1966 when the premises were sold to Allied Breweries Ltd which used it as a distribution depot.
