The Argyle Brewery Origins
The Argyle Brewery was established in St. Andrews in the 1820s. The firm was initially run by the partnership of Ireland & Halket.
It then passed to Rea Ireland after the partnership was dissolved in 1827.
David Stevenson Ireland took over the running of the Argyle Brewery, based in St. Andrews, when his father Rea died in 1860.
David died in 1890 and the brewery was purchased by a 'syndicate of gentlemen' who registered the Company as D.S.Ireland Ltd in 1893.
The Death of D.S.Ireland Leads to Financial Difficulties
The business soon experienced financial difficulties and was voluntarliy liquidated in 1896.
The liquidator, Rober Graham Abercrombie, disappeared in 1898. leaving substantial debts.
The brewery was offered for sale in 1899 and 1900.
The Argyle Brewery was closed and dissolved in 1902.
The premises were sold to Wilson & Co. bottlers and mineral water manufacturers.
Most of the brewery was demolished, although the entrance to the courtyard still remains.
Amongst the beers that the firm produced were Double Brown Stout, Sweet Ale, Table Beer, and Three Guinea Ale.
