Foundation of the Firm
The Sunderland Brewery was founded by Robert Fenwick on Low Street in Sunderland in 1770.
The Company traded as R.Fenwick & Co.
The business was registered as R.Fenwick & Co. Ltd in 1896 with 63 tied houses.
Amalgamation with George Younger & Son Ltd
R.Fenwick & Co. Ltd amalgamated with George Younger & Son Ltd in 1898.
The quality of Fenwick's ales was reflected by the award of five Brewery Exhibition medals between 1926 to 1935.
During the Second World War the Sunderland Brewery was partly destroyed during an air raid in 1943.
J.W.Green Ltd Takeover
George Younger & Son Ltd, sold the brewery to J.W.Green Ltd in 1952 with 101 tied houses.
After a merger with Flower & Sons Ltd of Stratford-on-Avon in 1954 the Sunderland Brewery became part of Flower's Breweries Ltd. Under its ownership the brewery ceased brewing in 1964.
