Robert Meiklejohn's Business

The Company was founded by Robert Meiklejohn in 1774.
Meiklejohn moved to the Candleriggs Brewery in Alloa in 1787, and to the Grange Brewery in 1852 when he leased the Candleriggs Brewery to George Younger & Co. The Candleriggs Brewery was purchased outright by George Younger's in 1871.
Meiklejohn's Bass Rock trademark was adopted in 1856. Its owners in that year were Charles Maitland, William Gorrie, and Robert Moyes.
The Company was registered as Robert Meiklejohn & Son Ltd in 1890.

Bass Crest Brewery Co.

The brewery was wound up in 1900.
Charles Maitland purchased the Grange Brewery in 1901 and renamed the business as the Bass Crest Brewery Co. which caused a conflict with Bass, Ratcliff & Gretton Ltd.
The Company was acquired by Bass, Ratcliff & Gretton Ltd in 1918 after a long dispute over the Bass name.
Despite the fact that the Company's Bass Rock trademark had no connection with Bass, Ratcliff & Gretton Ltd, all trace of any Bass Rock advertising was destroyed after its acquisition.
The Bass Crest Brewery was sold to George Younger & Son Ltd in 1919, and brewing ceased in 1941.

The manufacturer's mark states - WM Brownlie Ltd Glasgow.
