The Ulverston Business

In the 1840s the Case family owned a wine & spirits business in Ulverston.
In 1860 Robert Fell Case opened a small brewery on King Street in Ulverston.

The Cavendish Brewery of Barrow-in-Furness

In 1866 Wadham & Turner built a new brewery on Cavendish Street in Barrow-in-Furness for brewers Messrs. T.Thwaites & T.Hindle.
They did not occupy the site and in 1867 Robert Fell Case purchased the Cavendish Brewery, which was described as one of the most modern in the North West of England.
The firm traded as R.F.Case & Co.
In 1868 Robert Fell Case died after a tragic accident inside the brewery.
The Company's 'Bow and Arrow' trade mark was registered in 1885.
Robert's legacy lived, on and the business was registered as R.F.Case & Co. Ltd in 1904.

Hammond's United Breweries Ltd Takeover

The Cavendish Brewery, with 60 tied houses, was sold by Geoffrey Case to Hammond's United Breweries Ltd in 1959.
Hammond's United Breweries Ltd merged with Hope & Anchor Breweries Ltd and John Jeffrey & Co. Ltd to form Northern Breweries Ltd in 1960.
Northern Breweries Ltd changed its Company name to Northern Breweries of Great Britain Ltd in 1962 and then United Breweries Ltd.
In 1964 United Breweries Ltd merged with Charrington & Co. Ltd to form Charrington United Breweries Ltd becoming Bass Charrington Ltd in 1967 when it merged with Bass, Mitchells & Butlers Ltd.
Under the ownership of Bass Charrington Ltd the Cavendish Brewery closed in 1972.
Nothing remains of the brewery buildings.
