From the Newcastle-upon-Tyne Brewery to the Monkwearmouth Brewery

James Deuchar was born in Guthrie in Forfar, Scotland, in 1849. Having moved to Tyneside, he became a publican.
In 1868 he and his brother George joined in partnership with John and James Meikle as wine, spirit, ale, and porter merchants at the Half Moon inn in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
In 1870 Deuchar and Meikle diversified their business and purchased the Arthurs Hill Brewery on Westgate Road in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
In 1872 Deuchar became licensee of the Ridley Arms Brewery on Pilgrim Street in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. In 1874 he purchased the pub with its brewery outright.
One of his sons, James Wilson Deuchar, succeeded his father as chairman and between 1875 and 1882 the brewery was altered and extended.
Business was so successful that the Company acquired another brewery, its maltings, and public houses from J.J & W.H.Allison of Monkwearmouth in Sunderland.
In 1893 the plant at the Ridley Arms Brewery was dismantled and brewing was transferred to the Monkwearmouth Brewery.

James Deuchar Ltd Acquires The Lochside Brewery

In 1894 the Company was registered as James Deuchar Ltd. The business was restructured in 1896.
Growing demand for pale ale led James Deuchar to acquire the Lochside Brewery from William Ross & Co. of Montrose in 1900.
In order to service its 50 public houses and hotels, beer was shipped from Scotland to Newcastle on the Company's steamships, Lochside and Lochside II.
In 1922 Deuchar's purchased the Union mills in Montrose, which were used as maltings.
By the time of his death in 1927 James Deuchar owned 150 public houses.
Brewing ceased at the Monkwearmouth Brewery in 1930 when the site was converted into a mineral water factory.
In 1956 the Company, with its mineral water factory, Lochside Brewery, maltings and public houses, was acquired by Newcastle Breweries Ltd.
Newcastle Breweries Ltd transferred all brewing from the Lochside Brewery to the old Sandyford Brewery, previously owned by Robert Deuchar Ltd, which had been purchased in 1954.
Newcastle Breweries Ltd closed the Lochside Brewery which was purchased by Macnab Distilleries Ltd in 1957 when the brewery was converted into a whisky distillery.
The Sandyford Brewery was closed in 1961.
The distillery did not close until 1992 when it was earmarked for redevelopment.
The building was demolished during 2004 and 2005.
