Mitchells of Lancaster (Brewers) Ltd tin tray dating from 1980.
The business was founded in 1871 when William Mitchell rented the Black Horse pub and brewhouse on Common Garden Street in Lancaster.
He established the Central Brewery on Moor Lane, Lancaster, in 1882.
The Company traded as William Mitchell and by the time he died in 1919 he owned over 100 public houses.
In 1965 the Company was registered as Mitchells of Lancaster (Brewers) Ltd.
When Yates & Jackson Ltd closed in 1984, Mitchells transferred all brewing from Moor Lane to the Old Brewery on Brewery Lane, Lancaster.
The Company ceased brewing in 1999 and became a PubCo. with 42 public houses.
Mitchell Hotels acquired the York Brewery in 2008 but went into administration and closed with the loss of 120 jobs in 2018.
