Company Foundation and Early Years
The business was founded as Atkinson Brothers in 1855. The Aston Park Brewery was located on Queen's Road, Aston, Birmingham.
In 1888 the Company's three letter 'A's trademark was registered.
The Company, and its Aston Park Brewery, was registered as Atkinson's Brewery Ltd in 1898.
The Acquisition Years
In the 1910s and 1920s the Company acquired three breweries.
In 1919 Atkinson's took over George Hill of Blakenhall, near Wolverhampton, and purchased Rogers & Calcutt Ltd, of Wolverhampton, in 1925.
However the most sizeable acquisition was that of Peter Walker & Co. Ltd of Burton-on-Trent in 1925, with 100 tied houses.
The Company's last purchase was Twist's Brewery Ltd of Walsall in 1950, with 20 public houses.
Takeover and Closure
The Aston Park Brewery was acquired by Mitchells & Butlers Ltd in 1959.
Mitchells & Butlers Ltd merged with Bass, Ratcliff & Gretton Ltd forming Bass, Mitchells & Butlers Ltd in 1961, and the Aston Park Brewery with over 200 public houses, closed shortly afterwards in 1962.
The manufacturer's mark states - Samuel Groves & Co. Ltd.
