Foundation of the Firm
Early advertisements state that Richard Clarke established his business in 1847 but evidence indicates that it was his son, also named Richard, who founded the business in 1857.
Then he acquired the tenancy for the Sun Inn in Stockport and began brewing his own beer, delivering the barrels to local customers on a small handcart.
Slowly his business grew and prospered until he was able to build his own Reddish Brewery on Sandy Lane in Stockport, in 1874.
Richard Clarke & Co. Ltd Registration
The year Richard Clarke died in 1899 the Company was registered as Richard Clarke & Co. Ltd.
Under two more generations of the Clarke family, the business grew steadily.
The Reddish Brewery, with 65 public houses, was acquired by Boddington's Breweries Ltd in 1963 and was closed.
The manufacturer's mark simply states - Made in England
I believe it was produced by Samuel Groves & Co. Ltd.
