Foundation of the Brewery in Newcastle-on-Tyne
The business was founded by Robert Deuchar in 1869 when he purchased the Chancellor's Head Inn on Newgate Street in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
In 1888 he leased the Sandyford Brewery on Sandyford Road in Newcastle-upon-Tyne from John Arnison Simson and purchased it outright when Simson died in 1892.
The business, with 24 properties, was registered as Robert Deuchar Ltd in 1897. The Company traded as brewers, maltsters, wine, spirit and beer merchants.
Acquisition of the Duddingston Brewery
The Company purchased Scottish brewers Simson & McPherson Ltd and Pattisons Ltd in 1900.
Simson & McPherson Ltd owned two breweries, the St Mary's Brewery on Canongate in Edinburgh which ceased brewing in 1901, and the Abbey Brewery of Melrose which closed in 1906.
The St Mary's Brewery continued to be used as maltings until 1967.
By the early 1900s the Company employed over 300 people in England and Scotland.
Pattisons Ltd's Duddingston Brewery continued to brew and became Robert Deuchar's main Scottish operation.
In 1941 Robert Deuchar Ltd sold the Sandyford Brewery to Steel, Coulson & Co. Ltd which brewed in Edinburgh.
The Sandyford Brewery ceased to brew in that year ending its connection with Newcastle-on-Tyne.
The site was used as stores by Steel, Coulson & Co. Ltd until the 1950s.
Newcastle Breweries Ltd Takeover
The Duddingston Brewery continued operating under Robert Deuchar's ownership until it was purchased by Newcastle Breweries Ltd with 360 public houses in 1954.
After Newcastle Breweries Ltd merged with Scottish Brewers Ltd in 1960 to form Scottish & Newcastle Breweries Ltd, the Duddingston Brewery ceased brewing in 1961.
The maltings continued to be used until the early 1970s.
