Mountjoy Brewery Ltd black backed steel tray dating from the 1930s.
The impressive Mountjoy Brewery was established in 1852 by six businessmen on Russell Street in Dublin.
Two of the group, Alexander and Adam Findlater, were Scottish businessmen who saw the potential of establishing another stout and porter brewery to rival the success of Guinness.
The Company traded as Findlater & Co. and took four years to break-even.
From the 1860s onwards export sales contributed to significant growth for Findlater & Co., and profits peaked in 1866, however by the end of the century the Company began to struggle.
The two Findlater founders, Alexander and Adam, had died leaving Billy Findlater, their nephew, to run the business.
The Company was registered in 1891 becoming the Mountjoy Brewery Ltd.
In 1900 the Mountjoy Brewery was sold to Messrs Malone & Blood and it had by this time become the largest exporter of porter, next to Guinness, through the port of Dublin. The Company ceased brewing in 1957.
