Foundation and Early Years
The business was founded by Richard Crabb in 1798.
Richard was later joined by his son, also named Richard, and by 1826 the firm was trading as R.H.Crabb & Son, brewers of ales and porters.
In 1839, Richard Crabb & Sons business was listed as brewers and maltsters, with Richard living at Baddow Place.
A new Company was formed in 1866 when Richard was joined by Frederic Veley and Arthur Veley. The agreement included 37 public houses and a beer shop.
New Brewery in Great Baddow
The business traded as Crabb, Veley & Co., and a new brewery was built on Church Street in Great Baddow, in 1868.
The Company was registered as the Baddow Brewery Co. Ltd in 1895.
The quality of its beers was recognised when Baddow's won 1st Prize at a Brewers Exhibition in the 1920s.
Brewery Closure
The brewery, with 53 tied houses, was acquired by Seabrooke & Sons Ltd of Grays in 1927, and was closed.
The Old Brewery, as it is now called, hosts a number of businesses.
