Foundation of the Business
The Crown Brewery was founded on King Street in Norwich by John Youngs in 1807.
He was joined in partnership by Jonathan Davey and for a few years the firm traded as Davey & Youngs until it was dissolved.
The Company continued trading as Youngs & Company until the 1830s when John was joined by Mr Burt. It then traded as Youngs & Burt.
By 1845 the Company owned over 70 public houses in Norwich.
Charles Crawshay and Robert Youngs Join the Partnership
Charles Crawshay joined John Youngs at the Crown Brewery in the 1851, and when John Young's son, Robert Carss Youngs, became a third partner, the Company traded as Youngs, Crawshay & Youngs.
In 1865 the brewery was expanded when the firm purchased the adjacent Music House with additional properties and three acres of land. The Music House became the Company's brewery tap until 1932.
The Crown trade mark was introduced in the 1870s and in 1876 the Company purchased the Diss Brewery with 25 public houses.
The business, with 250 public houses, was registered as Youngs, Crawshay & Youngs Ltd in 1897.
The firm gained a reputation for the quality of its beers and between 1923 and 1937 it won nearly 50 brewing medals.
Bullard & Sons Ltd Takeover & Closure
The Crown Brewery was acquired by local rival Bullard & Sons Ltd in 1956 with 50 tied houses.
The brewery was closed in 1958 and most of the brewery buildings were demolished in 1965.
The manufacturer's mark states - 'Hancor', Mitcham.London.Printed in England.
