The Original Horseshoe Brewery

The Horseshoe Brewery was established on the junction of Tottenham Court Road and Oxford Street, London, in 1764.
After several owners the porter brewery was acquired by Sir Henry Meux in 1809 after a dispute amongst his fellow partners of Reid, Meux & Co.
The Company traded as Henry Meux & Co. and by 1811 it had become the sixth largest brewer of porter in London.
In 1814 disaster occurred when a large vat burst, causing severe physical and financial damage to the brewery, with the loss of eight lives.
After the death of his father in 1841, Sir Henry Meux the Second ran the brewery until 1878.

Meux's Brewery Co Ltd

Henry Bruce Meux and Lord Tweedmouth registered the business as Meux's Brewery Co. Ltd in 1888.
The Horseshoe Brewery closed in 1921 and all production was transferred to Thorne Brothers Ltd, Nine Elms Brewery in Wandsworth, which had been acquired by Meux's in 1914.
The Nine Elms Brewery was renamed the Horseshoe brewery whilst the former Horseshoe Brewery was demolished in 1922.
The 1930s was a decade of expansion for Meux's which acquired Burge & Co. Ltd of Windsor with 53 public houses in 1931, 5 public houses of William Jess Rodwell of Tring in 1935, and Mellersh & Neale Ltd of Reigate with 94 public houses in 1938.
The Company's famous horseshoe trade mark was registered in the 1930s.

Friary Meux Ltd

In 1956, Meux's Brewery Co. Ltd merged with Friary, Holroyd and Healy Breweries Ltd of Guildford, to form Friary Meux Ltd. Meux's owned over 300 public houses when the merger was completed.
The Company went into liquidation in 1961 and was acquired by Allied Breweries Ltd in 1964. It closed the brewery in 1966.
