Yates Castle Brewery Ltd hammered gold tin tray dating from 1960. The business was founded in Arwick in the 1830s. The firm traded as Gatehouse and Yates from 1877 to 1887 when it merged with the Castle Brewery. It was registered in 1887 as William Yates & Co. Ltd and was re-registered as Yates Castle Brewery Ltd in 1896 with 196 public houses. The Company owned offices in Birkenhead, where the firm also brewed its beers at the West Cheshire Brewery until 1927. The Castle Brewery was acquired by John Smith's Tadcaster Brewery Co. Ltd in 1961. Brewing ceased in 1966 when the premises were sold to Allied Breweries Ltd when it was used as a depot. The manufacturer's mark states - Frank Hawker Ltd. Birmingham.
