Style & Winch Ltd tin tray dating from the 1950s. The Medway Brewery was built in Maidstone by William Baldwin in 1799. During its history it traded under a variety of names; Baldwin & Godden (1836-1847), Baldwin, Godden & Holmes (1847-1858), Baldwin & Holmes (1858-1866), and Holmes & Style (1866-1882). In 1882 Holmes died leaving A.F.Style as the sole owner. The Company traded as A.F.Style & Co. and under his leadership it prospered. The Medway Brewery was extended and modernised between 1887 and 1899, the work interupted by a serious fire in 1894. Style & Winch Ltd was registered in 1899 to acquire and amalgamate the businesses of A.F.Style & Co. and Edward Winch & Sons Ltd's Chatham Brewery. The newly merged business owned a total of nearly 400 public houses. The Chatham Brewery was closed and all brewing was concentrated at Maidstone. Style & Winch Ltd embarked on an acquisition strategy purchasing and closing eight breweries by 1924. It bought H. & O.Vallance of Sittingbourne and Henry Simmons of Hadlow, with 14 houses, in 1905, the Tooting Brewery Ltd, with 14 houses, in 1907, Ashford Breweries Ltd Lion Brewery in 1912, Woodhams & Co. Ltd of Rochester in 1918, Edwin Finn & Sons Ltd of Lydd, with 42 houses in 1921, the Royal Brewery (Brentford) Ltd in 1922 and the Dartford Brewery Co. Ltd in 1924. The growing success of the Company made it a target and in 1929 it was acquired, along with its 600 public houses, by Barclay, Perkins & Co. Ltd of London. Barclay, Perkins & Co. Ltd merged with Courage & Co. Ltd in 1955 to form Courage & Barclay Ltd, and then merged with H. & G.Simonds Ltd, becoming Courage, Barclay, Simonds & Co.Ltd in 1960. Brewing ceased at the Medway Brewery in 1965, although a bottling plant was operated at the site until 1971. Sadly, the main brewery buildings were demolished in 1975 despite valiant efforts to save them. The manufacturer's mark states - Reginald Corfield Ltd Lombard Road.London.S.W.19.
