Phillips & Marriott Ltd brass tray dating from the 1920s. In 1878 Francis Phillips and Walter Henry Marriott formed a partnership and Francis moved to Coventry to run Phillips & Marriott's Midland Brewery on Much Park Street. In 1890 the partnership was dissolved and a new partnership, also named Phillips & Marriott, was formed in 1891. Francis Phillips and Walter's father, James Marriott, became the first directors. In 1899 Phillips & Marriott purchased the Coventry Brewery on Leicester Row which had been owned by the late William Ratliff. Phillips & Marriott Ltd was registered in 1900 to amalgamate the two businesses. Brewing was centred at the Midland Brewery and the Coventry Brewery was closed.
