Robert Porter & Co. Ltd black back steel tray dating from the 1920s. The Company was founded in Kings Cross, London, in 1848 and traded as Robert Porter & Co. The Company was a famous bottler of both Guinness and Bass Ales. The firm exported across the world and during the 1880s was awarded medals for the quality of its bottled ales. By 1905 the Company had registered as Robert Porter Ltd. In 1938 the Company amalgamated with rival London bottler Read Brothers Ltd to form Export Bottlers Ltd. Both Robert Porter & Co Ltd and Read Brothers Ltd used very similar bulldog trademarks on their advertising. The Company continued trading until the 1970s.
