The St. Anne's Well Brewery Co. was founded in 1819. A new brewery was built on Lower North Street in Exeter in 1878. The Company was registered as the St. Anne's Well Brewery Co. Ltd in 1889. The City Brewery was founded in 1700 and was registered in 1911 as Norman & Pring Ltd.
Norman & Pring's City Brewery and the St. Anne's Well Brewery Co. Ltd partially merged in 1943 and traded as City & St. Anne's (Norman & Pring) Ltd. Both companies were run separately until 1956. In 1956 brewing ceased at the City Brewery when production was concentrated at the St. Anne's Well Brewery although bottling continued there until 1968 when the brewery burnt down. City & St. Anne's Ltd was acquired by Whitbread & Co. Ltd in 1962 and the business was merged with Starkey, Knight & Ford Ltd in 1964. Brewing eventually ceased at the St. Anne's Well Brewery in 1968. The site was redeveloped for commercial and residential use.
