Hardy's Kimberley Brewery Ltd showcard dating from the 1910s. Samuel Robinson opened his first brewery in a rented bakehouse in Kimberley in 1832 using water from the Alley Spring. William and Thomas Hardy purchased Samuel Robinson's Brewery in 1837 and continued to brew there for a number of years. In 1861 they constructed a new brewery, located on Brewery Street, adjacent to Hansons Brewery. Stephen Hanson had built his brewery in 1847, also using water from the Alley Spring. In 1890, a new enlarged Hanson's Brewery was completed with a six storey brewery tower as its centrepiece. Kimberley could now boast two impressive breweries situated directly opposite each other. Both companies were independently registered in 1897 to acquire Hardy's Kimberley Brewery and its 97 public houses and R.G.Hanson and its 84 public houses. Despite their physical proximity to each other, both companies remained competitors for the next 30 years, and both followed the same acquisition strategy to increase their number of public houses. Increased production at both breweries resulted in a significant shortage in the Alley Spring's water supply. The problem was solved when an agreement was made to share water from the local Holy Well spring. Hardy's Kimberley Brewery Ltd & Hansons Ltd merged in 1930. Brewing was concentrated at the Hardy's brewery from 1932 onwards. Both companies continued to be named separately until 1972 when name of the Company was changed to Hardys & Hansons Ltd. Hansons Brewery was demolished in 1973. Hardys & Hansons Ltd, the largest remaining independent brewery in Nottinghamshire, was taken over by Greene King & Sons Ltd in 2006 and the old Hardy's Kimberley Brewery was closed in December that year. The distribution centre moved to Eastwood a few miles away. A limited selection of Hardys & Hansons beer brands is still brewed at Greene King's Westgate Brewery in Bury St. Edmunds, sadly they taste nothing like the original recipes. The original Hardy's maltings were Grade II listed in 2008 and will be preserved. The rest of the site was sold to developers in 2011. The manufacturer's mark states - Tom Browne & Co. Lithographers, Nottingham.
