James Deuchar Ltd tin tray dating from the 1950s. James Deuchar was born in Guthrie, Forfar, Scotland in 1849. Having moved to Tyneside, he became a publican. In 1868 he and his brother George joined in partnership with John and James Meikle as wine, spirit, ale, and porter merchants at the Half Moon inn in Newcastle. In 1870 Deuchar and Meikle diversified their business and purchased the Arthurs Hill Brewery, Westgate Road, Newcastle. In 1872 Deuchar became licensee of the Ridley Arms, and its brewery, on Pilgrim Street, Newcastle and in 1874 he bought the pub. One of his sons, James Wilson Deuchar, succeeded his father as Chairman and between 1875 and 1882 the brewery was altered and extended. Business was so successful that the Company acquired another brewery, its maltings, and public houses from J.J & W.H.Allison of Monkwearmouth, Sunderland. In 1893 the plant at the Ridley Arms was dismantled and brewing was concentrated at the Monkwearmouth Brewery. In 1894 the Company was registered as James Deuchar Ltd and was restructured in 1896. Growing demand for pale ale led Deuchar to acquire the Lochside Brewery from William Ross & Co. of Montrose in 1900. In order to service its 50 public houses and hotels, beer was shipped from Scotland to Newcastle on the Company's steamships, Lochside and Lochside II. In 1922 Deuchar's purchased the Union mills in Montrose, which were used as maltings. By the time of his death in 1927, James Deuchar owned 150 public houses. Brewing ceased at the Monkwearmouth Brewery in 1930 when the site was converted into a mineral water factory. In 1956 the Company, its mineral water factory, Lochside Brewery, maltings and public houses were acquired by Newcastle Breweries Ltd. Newcastle Breweries Ltd closed the Lochside Brewery which was purchased by Macnab Distilleries Ltd in 1957 and the brewery was converted into a whisky distillery. The distillery did not close until 1992 when it was earmarked for redevelopment. The building was demolished during 2004 and 2005. The manufacturer's mark states - Reginald Corfield Ltd Lombard Road, London, S.W.19.
