J.Nimmo & Sons Ltd enamel tray dating from 1910. The Castle Eden Brewery was based in Castle Eden, Durham.

J.Nimmo & Sons Ltd enamel tray dating from 1910. The business was founded in Castle Eden by John Nimmo in 1826. John leased the Castle Eden Brewery from the Burdon family. John died in 1867 and was succeeded as Chairman by his son, William. The Company was registered as J.Nimmo & Sons Ltd in 1892. In 1901 William was succeeded by his son-in-law, John I Hopper. During Hopper's leadership in the 1900s, output almost doubled. In 1908 W.J.Nimmo, son of William, became Chairman. In 1912 the Company acquired Thomas Chilton of Seaham Harbour, and its 12 public houses. Throughout the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s Nimmos continued to purchase public houses to increase its estate, and in 1946 it purchased the Castle Eden Brewery and surrounding land from the Burdon family. In 1956 J.Nimmo & Sons Ltd became a public company. The Castle Eden Brewery and its 202 public houses were acquired by Whitbread & Co. Ltd in 1963. In 1999 Whitbread & Co. Ltd sold the business to a management buy-out which was named Castle Eden Brewery Ltd. In 2002 the new Company acquired J.W.Cameron & Co. Ltd's Lion Brewery from Wolverhampton & Dudley Breweries Ltd. All brewing was transferred to Hartlepool and the Castle Eden Brewery was closed. The site was cleared for a new housing development.
