The business was founded in 1843 by John Arkell at Lower Stratton, near Swindon.
A new Kingsdown Brewery was built in 1861 at Stratton St. Margaret, Swindon. In 1877 maltings were erected on the site. In 1927 the Company was registered as J.Arkell & Sons Ltd and a bottling plant was built that year.
The Company owns around 100 public houses and is still brewing independently.
Interestingly a tray of the exact design was produced in enamel during the 1920s, another produced in the early 1960s, and this one featured which was produced in the late 1970s.
