Brunt Bucknall & Co. Ltd ceramic coaster dating from the 1900s. The Hartshorne Brewery was based in Hartshorne which is now in South Derbyshire.
Brunt Bucknall & Co. Ltd ceramic coaster dating from the 1900s. The Hartshorne Brewery was founded by victualler, William Brunt, in 1832. From 1832 to 1855 Brunt & Bucknall were listed as brewers in Woodville, which at that time was located in Leicestershire. After a fire in 1875 the brewery was rebuilt over two years. By 1876 the business was trading as Brunt, Bucknall, Ratcliff & Betterton. The following year it was trading as Brunt & Company. In 1890 the firm, and 101 properties, was registered as a limited company, and by this time it was advertising its 'Wooden Box Ales'. By 1896 offices, stores and a depot, had been established in Leicester, and the Company employed more than 300 workers. Financial difficulties after the First World War resulted in the acquisition of the Hartshorne Brewery and over 100 pubs, by Thomas Salt & Co. Ltd in 1919. Brewing ceased in 1923. The brewery was demolished, but the bottling stores, remain. Between 2005 and 2012, part of the building was used by the Tollgate Brewery. The manufacturer's mark states - Mintons England
