The business was founded in 1915 when Edwin and Lucy Holden purchased the Park Inn based in Woodsetton from Atkinson's Brewery Ltd which had a malthouse at the rear of the premises.
In 1939 the Holden family purchased Atkinson's malthouse and installed new brewing equipment.
Edwin Holden's Bottling Company was added at the rear of the Park Inn in 1945 not only bottling Holden's range of beers but also national brews for distribution to clubs, free houses and wholesalers.
In 1961 a new enlarged brewery was built to replace the old brewery which had been extended periodically.
The Company was registered in 1964 and the name changed to Holden's Brewery Ltd, Hopden Brewery, Woodsetton.
In 2012 the Company began a major expansion of the brewery including a visitor centre.
The Hopden Brewery is still brewing independently and is run by the fourth generation of the Holden family.
