Smithwick's Brewery was founded by John Smithwick in 1710.
The Company and its St. Francis Abbey Brewery was registered in 1899.
By 1900 output was at an all time low and the Smithwick family was advised to shut the brewery. Instead, the Company reduced its range of beers and secured military contracts which resulted in a turnaround of the business.
By 1950 Smithwick's was exporting its beers to Boston, USA.
Smithwick's was purchased by Arthur Guinness, Son & Co. Ltd in 1965.
Guinness is now part of the Diageo group and brewing was transferred from the Kilkenny Brewery to the St. James Gate Brewery in Dublin, in 2013. The site re-opened as a visitor attraction in 2014.
