Cornbrook Brewery Co. Ltd tin tray dating from the 1950s. The business was operated as Lawrence O'Neill & Co. in 1884. In 1885 the Company was registered as Cornbrook Brewery Co. Ltd to acquire H.Weld, Blundell & Co. Compared to many other companies of it size at that time, it was not aggressive in the acquisitions market and only purchased three breweries the most significant of which was the Phoenix Brewery Co. Ltd of Heywood in 1937. The brewery, based in Old Trafford, was acquired by United Breweries Ltd, formely named Northern Breweries Ltd, in 1961. United Breweries Ltd merged with Charrington & Co. Ltd in 1962 to form Charrington United Breweries Ltd. Under the ownership of Charrington United Breweries Ltd, Cornbrook Ales were advertised as part of United Lancastrian Breweries. In 1967 Charrington United Breweries Ltd merged with Bass, Mitchells & Butlers Ltd becoming Bass Charrington Ltd. Bass Charrington Ltd continued operating at Cornbrook's Old Trafford site as part of its Northern Division, eventually closing the brewery in 1973.
