John Davenport & Sons Brewery Ltd ceramic matchstriker dating from the 1920s. The first record of the Davenport family in the brewing trade was in 1829 when Robert Davenport was registered as a brewer at Brearley Street, Hockley, Birmingham. John was malting at Bath Row, Birmingham, in 1852 when he was joined by his son, Robert. In 1867 the business of John Davenport & Sons was listed as 'Malsters, Hop Merchants, and makers of Pale and Brown Malt for brewing Bitter Ales and Porter'. The Company was registered as John Davenport & Sons Ltd in 1896 with 57 public houses. One of the early innovations was Davenports 'Beer at Home' service which began in 1904. This expanded rapidly and a distribution network was set up all over the country. A separate Company, Davenports CB Ltd, was set up to deal with the bottled beer and home delivery service, while John Davenport & Sons Ltd continued to run the brewery and the licensed houses. In 1929 the Company was re-registered as Davenport's Brewery Ltd but it continued to trade as John Davenport & Sons' Brewery Ltd until 1950. During the war years the home delivery business suffered due to rationing of brewing materials and fuel for transport, but after the war Davenports made full use of TV for advertising and the firm prospered again. The sing along song 'Beer at home means Davenports...' became a well known TV advert. In 1962 Davenports acquired Dare's Brewery Ltd Southend Brewery with 30 public houses. Davenports built their main garage on land owned by Dare's. In 1974 Davenports CB Ltd and John Davenport & Sons Ltd ceased to operate independently and instead traded collectively as Davenport's Brewery Ltd. Davenports continued to expand and by 1985 the Company owned 123 public houses, cash & carry oulets and off-licences. 600 free trade outlets were supplied throughout Birmingham and the Midlands. The home delivery business was however beginning to suffer when, in 1986, the Company, its brewery, and retail estate, were acquired by Greenall Whitley plc. An agreement was made with Greenalls to progressively decommission the Bath Row site, and brewing ceased in 1989. The Davenports brand name has survived and is brewed as a craft beer.
